BetterCast and OpenDisplay are both free, GPLv3 second-display apps. BetterCast is worth considering when your setup includes Android, Windows or Linux receivers. OpenDisplay also links to independent community projects for other platforms. Those are separate from its official downloads; check each project's status before deciding. Linux support in BetterCast means receiving, not sending a Linux desktop.
If your hardware is older
This is the clearest practical difference between the two. BetterCast's Mac sender runs on macOS 13 Ventura, and its iPhone and iPad receiver runs on iOS 15. OpenDisplay's own site lists macOS 14 Sonoma for its Mac sender and iOS 16 / iPadOS 16 for its Apple receiver.
So a Mac stuck on Ventura, or an iPad that stopped at iPadOS 15, can run BetterCast but not OpenDisplay's official app. If both your devices are current, this difference does not affect you and you should choose on the device roles above instead.
When to consider OpenDisplay
If you use Apple devices and want a USB-connected iPhone or iPad display, review OpenDisplay's documented wired setup. Its official site also describes multiple receivers and using a spare Mac as a display. Those capabilities are not exclusive to BetterCast.
When to consider BetterCast
BetterCast offers an official receiver path for an Android tablet, Windows computer or Linux machine alongside its Apple apps. Windows sending is available in beta. Supported Apple devices can connect peer-to-peer without a router; mixed-platform wireless setups generally use a shared local network. Android has an ADB wired option. Do not assume the same cable workflow applies to every receiver.
Is BetterCast faster?
We have not published a controlled, like-for-like benchmark against OpenDisplay. Frame-rate limits alone do not establish lower latency. Try your actual device pair, resolution and connection before choosing.
